About Clean Up the World
Clean Up the World is a community based environmental program that inspires and empowers individuals and communities from every corner of the globe to clean up, fix up and conserve their environment.
Now in its 16th year, Clean Up the World, held in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), mobilises an estimated 35 million volunteers from 120 countries annually, making it one of the largest community-based environmental campaigns in the world.
The campaign brings together businesses, community groups, schools, governments and individuals in a range of activities and programs that positively improve local environments.
Since the first Clean Up the World campaign in 1993 the improvements achieved due to the efforts of millions of concerned volunteers around the world have been astounding. Examples of community-led Clean Up the World activities include:
* Recycling and resource recovery
* Tree planting
* Education campaigns
* Water reuse and conservation
* Competitions
* Exhibitions
* Fix up projects.
While participants are encouraged to hold environmental events on or around CUW Weekend (always the 3rd weekend in September), Clean Up the World is also designed to provide support to groups undertaking activities throughout the year.
Clean Up the World is associated with the Department of Public Information of the United Nations and is supported by, and collaborates with, a range of partner organisations in various countries. |

Web Link Shelterforce
Shelterforce is the nation’s oldest continually published housing and community development magazine. For more than three decades, Shelterforce
has been a primary forum for organizers, activists, and advocates in
the affordable-housing and neighborhood revitalization movements.
Shelterforce is published by the National Housing Institute,
an independent nonprofit organization that examines the issues causing
the crisis in housing and community in America. These issues include
poverty and racism, disinvestment and lack of employment, safety,
education, and breakdown of the social fabric. NHI examines how these
and other factors affect people as they try to build safe, viable
neighborhoods.
NHI searches for what does and does not work in community-building. In our 30-plus years of existence, Shelterforce has become the leading publication for community-building professionals and other stakeholders in creating vibrant communities.
We are dedicated to providing the tools (information, analysis,
resources) for advocates, activists, and community members to organize
their communities, rebuild their neighborhoods, and create decent
housing and living-wage jobs for the families who live there. |

Web Link Sustainable Urban Development
Complete resources for sustainable urban development - Urban development should be guided by a comprehensive planning and
management vision that includes interconnected green space, a
multi-modal transportation system, and mixed-use development. Diverse
public and private partnerships should be used to create livable
communities that protect historic, cultural, and environmental
resources. In addition, policymakers, regulators and developers should
support sustainable site planning and construction techniques that
reduce pollution and create a balance between built and natural systems.
